Howard Lindzon Hockey Stocktwits

Lindzon's a Canuck. With me at the Stanley Cup Finals in June, 2011.

I ask Howard if the stock market is rigged, as his pals James Altucher and Marc Cuban have argued. Absolutely, according to Lindzon, and assuming so will get you on the course to better investing. "You can still make a fortune doing this. There are so many signals for small investors [that you can pick up on Stocktwits]. It would be silly not to."

On the tens of trillions of dollars of US government debt, "Why worry about it?" Howard tells me. "The numbers are unfathomable. You've got to get out of bed in the morning. It's all about learning risk management and finding things that make common sense and have catalysts for growth. Despite all these stupid numbers and activities by our governments, there are still tremendous opportunities out there."

We talk entrepreneurship: "My whole goal has been to position myself in the middle of some good [deal] flow," Howard tells me, and it's obvious he's done that in the venture capital community by having a kick ass voice through social and traditional media. Howard now owns pieces of some 100 companies. See: Social Leverage LLC.

Howard's advice to new investment advisors: Decide if you're going to sell a product or roll up your sleeves and learn the business of the markets. "If you're a good salesman, don't focus on the market, find good product. Be the relationships guy. Put your head down and sell, then you can blow yourself up really nicely if you surround yourself with good product." Learning the markets will come later with time and a little pain.

He's as proud of Stocktwits as ever, the social network for investors he co-founded and leads as CEO. "The lessons you can learn from trading American stocks, and we don't do penny stocks [on Stocktwits], you can apply into all kinds of industries. Learning how to invest in small-, mid-, and large-cap American stocks can teach you investing lessons that apply to every market."

Our 20-minute chat with Howard is available in its entirety below. Have a listen and share it with any person or forum you think would benefit from Howard's broad experience in media and the markets.
