This morning, Canada Carbon (CCB:TSXV) announced the preliminary results of laboratory characterization tests being conducted by Evans Analytical Group (EAG) on its Miller high-purity hydrothermal graphite. The results were obtained using Raman spectroscopy and definitely determines the degree of crystallinity of graphite (and other materials). These tests showed that the Miller project's graphite has an abnormally high quality crystalline structure which is beneficial in the production of graphene. The company also completed dispersion tests which showed that Canada Carbon's graphite partially exfoliated (desired).
Dr. Karol Putyera, who was overseeing the bench-scale tests commented: "In combination with the exceptional high purity and highly crystalline nature of the Miller graphite, this dispersion behaviour could lead to solution-based processing of this material for producing graphene, which opens up a wide range of potential applications."
The EAG laboratory report summarizes the results, as follows: "The Raman spectrum was that of a single crystal of graphite. The crystalline quality of the graphite was better than any other industrial graphite sample we at EAG have analyzed to date."
The company is still waiting on other characterization procedures, including C-ray diffraction spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy in order to provide better insight into the crystalline nature of the graphite product from the company's Miller project. The results of those procedures are expected shortly, and will be reported when received. Management expects to receive their bulk sampling permit soon which will allow them to expand their test work at the project.
R. Bruce Duncan, chief executive officer and director of Canada Carbon, remarked: "Our Miller hydrothermal graphite has once again exceeded our most optimistic expectations. Following our earlier metallurgical testing at SGS Lakefield, which yielded graphite as pure as could be determined by their analytical method (please refer to the press release dated July 23, 2013, 'Canada Carbon achieves 100 per cent graphitic carbon on second purification test on Miller graphite sample'), a sample of that same material was shown to be of nuclear-grade purity by GD-MS (please refer to press release dated Oct. 15, 2013). Then, we were able to show that brief thermal upgrading could remove more than 90 per cent of the already very low contaminant burden (please refer to press release dated Dec. 12, 2013). And now, we have clear scientific evidence of the high order crystallinity of our Miller hydrothermal graphite. Moreover, the simple process to exfoliate the graphite to graphene, in combination with its highly crystalline nature and high purity, will also allow us to produce top-quality graphene materials. This will give us access to yet another high-value market."
According to the company, most graphite companies that intend to separate natural graphite into graphene use variations on Hummer's method which involves harsh chemicals that can lead to the oxidization of the graphene sheets. The final step in the exfoliation of graphene from graphite using Hummer's method is by immersion in a polar solvent, in combination with sonication. Dr. Karol Putyera, dispersed a sample of the graphite from the Miller project the non-polar solvent carbon disulphide, and without sonication, the sample partially exfoliated.
The alternative; synthetic graphene, is much more expensive to produce.
