The Young Mining Professionals Toronto (YMPT) is back, and excited to announce we will be hosting Pierre Lassonde as our distinguished speaker on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Hy's Steakhouse in Toronto.
Pierre Lassonde is the Founder and Chairman of the world's leading gold-focused royalty and streaming company, Franco-Nevada. Mr. Lassonde is an authority on the world's most sought-after precious metal, has served as Chairman of the World Gold Council, and authored The Gold Book.
He also spoke Thursday night at the annual Canadian Mining Hall of Fame dinner in Toronto, which saw Robert Friedland, Stu Blusson, Louis Gignac, J. Keith Brimacombe and Harold (Hank) Williams inducted.
In the early 1980s as co-founders of the original Franco-Nevada, Mr. Lassonde and then-partner Seymour Schulich revolutionized the mining industry with their metals royalty business model. This innovative approach to financing in an already mature industry was transformative, leading to the development of some of the world's largest and most successful mines. It also created substantial wealth for the company's shareholders.
Since the IPO of 'new' Franco-Nevada in 2007, the company has outperformed gold bullion and comparable gold equity benchmarks by delivering a 19% compounded return and a six-fold increase in the company's market capitalization.
Mr. Lassonde's honours and awards are too numerous to list, but highlights include The Northern Miners' Mining Man of the Year, the PDAC's Mining Developer of the Year, a spot in the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame and finally, appointment as a Companion of the Order of Canada. Mr. Lassonde's success has also allowed him to contribute a great deal back into the community, especially towards education of future generations of mineral engineers and geologists.
On February 18, 2016, members of the Young Mining Professionals Toronto will hear first-hand how Mr. Lassonde overcame his challenges and became one of Canada's great entrepreneurs.
Attendance at this event is limited to YMPT members and the evening will be an intimate dinner affair with fewer than 30 seats available. Please note that, due to availability, each member is eligible to purchase only one ticket to the event.
