Two bros make a short film together about a legendary miner.
When we were kids my older brother Adam used to beat the pulp out of me.
He gave up when I outgrew him and we have been good friends ever since.
Now I get to exact revenge on him every time we play golf.
On a hike in the Catalina Mountains above Tucson, Arizona, in 2010, during one of our #BroCup golf trips, I shared with Adam a story I had recently heard about a Tucson area mineral legend, the great David Lowell, discoverer of 17 ore bodies.
Climbing that dry, hot, red rock face, we talked about what it would be like to meet him.
Adam, a filmmaker, thought that Lowell would make a cool subject for a mini documentary.
At the time, I emailed Nolan Watson, CEO of Sandstorm Gold, who was my connection to Lowell, to see if we could be introduced.
“No way, nobody gets to meet him.” Nolan told me. and I understood.
Nolan’s friends had done very well working with Lowell and were protective of who met him, even though our intentions were good.
Fast forward two and a half years to last November and we got our chance. Lowell agreed to talk to BNN Television and me.
I quickly called upon my brother Adam, and was relieved when he accepted the assignment, to tape a conversation with Lowell at his ranch.
One of Adam’s greatest strengths is his taste for music; he had the perfect song for our short film about Lowell:
Adam motivated his composer pal Steve Nelson to create 50 Acre 1, a song made for Lowell and our short film, you can download it here:
Play Steve Nelson - 50 Acre 1 (For David Lowell) (MP3)
When you listen to it think of a legend you'd like to meet and then tell somebody about it.
Within a few years it might happen, just like it did for us.
Our short film will be live in a couple of hours.
