Boys are often viewed as "Defective Girls" in the public school system, according to author Christina Hoff Sommers, who has three suggestions for what schools can do to help boys succeed: 1) bring back recess, 2) turn boys into readers, and 3) work with the young male imagination.

"Of the children diagnosed with ADHD, 75% are boys. Some psychologists have suggested, if you want to prescribe less Ritalin, offer children more recess."

"If we want boys to flourish, we are going to have to encourage their distinctive reading, writing, drawing and even joke-telling propensities."
